Olympic boxer, Vasile Belous killed in car crash days after his 33rd birthday

Olympic boxer, Vasile Belous has sadly been killed in a car crash in Moldova.  The boxer was reportedly traveling at high speed on Monday night, August 30, when he lost control of his Mercedes and drove into the brick wall at the entrance of a monastery, causing extensive damage to the vehicle. Belous was pronounced dead at the scene in the town of Calaraseuca, on the border with Ukraine, just days after he celebrated his 33rd birthday.Officials in Moldova are investigating the incident, and it is not yet known what caused the Olympian to crash.Belous competed at the London 2012 Olympics as a 23-year-old, and managed to reach the second round by beating Seleman Kidunda of Tanzania. He also competed at the  European Championships in 2017, where he collected a bronze medal in the welterweight division. His last bout was a defeat in Poland four months ago, the 44th loss of his amateur career which also yielded 72 victories and two knock-outs over 116 fights.Belous’ former coach of more than 15 years Petru Caduc told Moldovan outlet Publika: “He was a very technical athlete. There were few athletes with such technique in Moldova. “He was a personality, a very dedicated man. He fulfilled everything I asked of him. He trusted me, he never betrayed me. “He was a great fighter. We are very sorry that what happened.” National team boxing coach Igor Untila added: “He was a performance athlete, the pride of Moldovan boxing.”He participated in the Olympic Games and it is a great tragedy what happened.
